Why should we care about preserving the past - or protecting the future?

This article is very effective in getting Ignatius' point about ancestry across. He does this by maintaining a contemplative tone throughout his entire argument about why people should care and learn about their ancestors or descendants He establishes this tone well by continually asking questions to both himself and the reader about why past international events have purpose. This is evident in his phrases such as "Why should people give a hoot about their ancestors of descendants?" By appearing as open minded and curious on the subject, Ignatius encourages the reader to read more into the column and discover his viewpoint as well as develop their own.
